About the beach

From Punta Ristola, the headland that closes the bay of Leuca to the west, the coast continues towards Torre Marchiello for about two and a half kilometres of rocky shore and cliff. There are no sandy beaches or beach clubs: the rock here is smoother and paler than in the rest of the bay and you get into the water from the rocks, with water shoes on your feet.

It is a coast of caves. On the side of Punta Ristola, some twenty metres above the sea, opens the Grotta Porcinara, carved out by people and used as a sanctuary from prehistory to Roman times, near the Grotta del Diavolo. Towards Punta Marchiello, where the ruins of the 16th-century tower remain, the low, jagged coast hides other sea caves, such as the Tre Porte cave and the Drago cave.

There is a car park a few steps away. The coast faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered, with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Posidonieto Capo San Gregorio - Punta Ristola Natura 2000 site.
