About the beach
San Gregorio is an inlet on the coast of Patù, at the southern tip of the Salento. Around the small pier the coast is low rock; in the wilder bay next to it there is a little beach of large pebbles and a few short stretches of sand. Much of the beachfront is free and there are a couple of beach clubs. Among the rocks and pebbles water shoes come in handy.
The sea is suited to those who love diving or swimming with fins and mask. This was the port of the Messapian city of Vereto: underwater, at about seven metres, you can still see the ancient steps and pier, together with the freshwater well that made the landing so valuable in trade with the East. The seaside spot takes its name from the tower of San Gregorio, now a private home.
The car parks are a few hundred metres away. The inlet faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), north-west (maestrale) and even south-east (scirocco) winds it stays sheltered; with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea comes into the bay. It is part of the Posidonieto Capo San Gregorio - Punta Ristola Natura 2000 site.
