About the beach
The bay of Santa Maria di Leuca opens in a crescent below the seafront, between Punta Meliso and Punta Ristola. It is mostly rocky coast, partly high: along the seafront there are two small sandy beaches, one almost in the middle of the bay, and otherwise you get into the sea from the rocks, so water shoes are best. Just under half the beachfront is free; the rest is taken up by beach clubs, mostly set up on the rock.
On the rocky shore the bagnarole still stand, the structures where, in the last century, ladies bathed out of sight; behind them line up the Art Nouveau and Moorish-style villas of the late 19th century. Towards Punta Ristola the rock becomes smoother and paler, near the Torre dell'Omo Morto and the Grotta Porcinara.
There is no shortage of car parks, the first a few steps away. The bay faces south-east: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered, with east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and south (ostro) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Posidonieto Capo San Gregorio - Punta Ristola Natura 2000 site.
