The Old Tower, more commonly known as dell’Omo Morto” (Of the Dead Man), is mounted on a cliff west of Santa Maria di Leuca just a few meters from the sea.
Built around 1569, it is called this way because of the discovery of human bones in the cave below. Due to continuous rain and a heavy snowfall the northern wall of this tower collapsed.
With a circular base, and a domed internal ambient it has walls that are 5cm thick and inside them stairs were built which lead to the summit of the tower.
It is a spacious blockhouse which, on the ground floor, has a service room which should have opened the cannoneer.
