The wonderful villas in Santa Maria di Leuca make the promenade of the borough of Castrignano del Capo unique. Liberty style is the main one, but there are also more Moorish motifs and oriental-like gazebos.
They are the holiday houses of noble families or rich bourgeoisie which, towards the end of the 19th century, embellished the peaceful seaside town, giving it an oriental and unique charm.
Villa La Meridiana was the first one to be built and on its facade the sun marks the time. Walking along the promenade overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it is possible to admire tens of fascinating architectures, such as Villa Episcopo, with gentle blue decorations on white background, and Villa Daniele, with Moorish decorations.
On the promenade stand out the “bagnarole”, interesting buildings a few metres away from the shore, inside which there are rock-hewn swimming pools, where the sea water enters through a narrow channel. Here, women used to bathe, away from indiscreet eyes and away from the hot summer sun.
