About the beach
Punta Penna Grossa is the northern tip of the Torre Guaceto nature reserve, in the municipality of Carovigno. The beach is of very fine sand, about one and a half kilometres long, with dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub that give way inland to junipers and a small freshwater marsh. Almost the whole beachfront is free, with only one beach club; the regional records mention a boardwalk down to the sea and JOB chairs for people with disabilities.
Protection rules apply in the reserve: the dunes must not be trampled, and in the marine protected area there are limits on anchoring and fishing. To the south the coast continues towards the tower of Guaceto. It is part of the Torre Guaceto e Macchia S. Giovanni and Torre Guaceto Natura 2000 sites.
The soft seabed slopes gently and is suitable for children to play. The nearest car park is about a kilometre away: you get there on foot or, according to the regional records, by shuttle bus. The beach faces north: north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds make the sea rough, while with east (levante), south-east (scirocco), south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds it stays calm.
