About the beach
In front of the village of Specchiolla, in Carovigno, the coast is almost all low rocky shore: over four kilometres of flat rock with a few small sandy coves. Much of the beachfront is taken up by beach clubs, some of which accept pets and one of which offers a JOB chair; the free stretches are mostly on the rocks.
Between Specchiolla and Torre Santa Sabina stands Torre Morgicchio, a square tower from the early 17th century built to protect the masseria it is attached to from pirates. About a kilometre from the coast is Torre De li Frascinari, round, late Gothic and remodelled in the Aragonese period: the name comes from the «frascinari», as the inhabitants were called, after a gravel used for houses and roads.
The car parks are a short walk away. To get into the water from the rocks you will need water shoes. The coast faces north-east: north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and east (levante) winds make the sea rough, with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds you are sheltered.
