About the beach

Baia Verde stretches for over four kilometres south of Gallipoli: fine white sand, a sea with emerald-green glints and dunes where the Mediterranean scrub grows inside small wooden enclosures. The beachfront is split almost evenly between free stretches and numerous beach clubs, many of which list aids for people with disabilities. Near the shore the water is shallow, suitable for children to play.

To the south the beach ends in a small pine wood that links it to the Pizzo bay. Towards Gallipoli, a few metres from the sea, is the Torre San Giovanni la Pedata, a square 16th-century watchtower used as a marine biology station. Towards the town runs the lungomare Galilei.

There are plenty of car parks, the first a few steps away, and the area also has a railway stop. Gallipoli is a Blue Flag municipality and the stretch lies within the Isola di Sant'Andrea e litorale di Punta Pizzo regional nature park, where the protection rules apply. The beach faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered, with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Litorale di Gallipoli e Isola S. Andrea Natura 2000 site.
