About the beach
Punta Pizzo is the rocky headland on the southern coast of Gallipoli, inside the Isola di Sant'Andrea e litorale di Punta Pizzo regional nature park. The point alternates low rocks and higher stretches with a few scraps of sand; crossing the pine wood you reach a sandy beach about a kilometre long, partly with facilities. For the free beach, walk north along the water's edge, past the sunshades. It is suitable for families.
In summer the pine wood behind gives shade, and the scrub is rich in strawberry tree, myrtle and mastic. On the headland stands the Torre del Pizzo, built in 1569 and recognisable by the triangular «pizzo» (point) at the top, next to a masseria; off Gallipoli, on the island of Sant'Andrea, Audouin's gull nests. Protection rules apply in the park.
The nearest car park is a short distance away, then you continue on foot. Gallipoli is a Blue Flag municipality. This stretch faces north-west: with north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds it is sheltered, with north (tramontana), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Litorale di Gallipoli e Isola S. Andrea Natura 2000 site.
