About the beach
North of Porto Cesareo, towards Torre Lapillo, the coast opens into a series of small bays: about one and a half kilometres of sand alternating with low rocks, between Scala di Furno and Torre Chianca. About two thirds of the beachfront are free, with a few beach clubs. The seabed is shallow and sandy and the beach is suitable for families; the data report erosion.
Torre Chianca, from the 16th century and square in plan, watches over the inlet and now houses a first-aid centre for sea turtles. About eighty metres from the shore, four and a half metres down, lie five Roman columns of cipollino marble, the cargo of a shipwreck: when the sea is calm you can see them with mask and fins. At Scala di Furno there is a fortified Bronze Age village, now partly submerged. The rules of the Porto Cesareo marine protected area on anchoring and fishing apply.
The first car park is a few steps away. The coast faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered, with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Porto Cesareo Natura 2000 site.
