About the beach
Marina di Chiatona, a seaside village of Massafra on the western coast of the Gulf of Taranto, has a sandy beach over four kilometres long. The beach clubs, accommodation and restaurants are concentrated in the central part; at either end stretch long sections of free beach, which make up most of the beachfront, framed by dunes with Mediterranean scrub.
The seabed is soft and slopes gently: the shoreline is suitable for children to play. When the south-east wind (scirocco) blows the water ripples, while with the north wind (tramontana) it stays calm and clear.
There are car parks a short distance from the beach. Facing south, it is sheltered with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds, and also with east (levante) and west (ponente) winds; with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds the waves roll in. The coastline is affected by erosion: to reach the shore, use the paths without trampling the dunes. Inland, Massafra is known for its ravines and rock-hewn complexes. It lies within the Stornara state nature reserve. It is part of the Pinete dell'Arco Ionico Natura 2000 site.
