About the beach
East of the centre of Castellaneta Marina the beach continues for almost four kilometres of very fine, pale sand, as far as the Torre della Marina. Almost the whole beachfront is free, with only one beach club; the sandy seabed slopes slowly and is fine for swimming for the whole family.
Along its whole length the beach is backed by dunes with Mediterranean scrub, and behind them stretches the Aleppo pine wood. The stretch lies within the Stornara state nature reserve, which protects the coastal pine wood of the Arco Ionico.
There is a car park a short distance from the beach. The coast faces south-east: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds, and also with south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds, the sea stays calm; with east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and south (ostro) winds it gets rough. The coastline is affected by erosion: to get to the beach, use the gaps in the dunes. Castellaneta is a Blue Flag municipality. It is part of the Pinete dell'Arco Ionico Natura 2000 site.
