About the beach
The Palagiano coastline is a uniform stretch of almost six kilometres of sand between the mouths of the Lenne and the Lato, on the western coast of the Gulf of Taranto. Almost the whole beachfront is free, with very few beach clubs, and the water is shallow, suitable for children. Behind it run the dunes and the pine wood; towards the Lato is the Bosco Romanazzi.
The stretch lies within the Stornara state nature reserve, established in 1977 to protect the coastal Aleppo pine wood of the Arco Ionico, with wetlands such as the Lago Salinella; it is managed by the Carabinieri and visits are by booking.
There is a car park a few steps from the beach, but it is the only one in the area. With very few beach clubs, bring shade and water. The coast faces south-east: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), north-west (maestrale) and also south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea is calm, while with east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and south (ostro) winds it gets rough. The coastline is affected by erosion: do not trample the dunes. It is part of the Pinete dell'Arco Ionico Natura 2000 site.
