About the beach

Marina di Ferrara is one of the seaside villages of Massafra, north-west of Taranto. The beach is about three and a half kilometres long, sandy, entirely free and backed along its whole length by dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub; there is also a campsite in the area. The stretch reaches as far as the mouth of the Patemisco river.

The seabed is shallow and sandy and slopes slowly, so children can play in the water safely. There are no beach clubs: bring shade and water. Inland, Massafra is known for its ravines and its large complexes of rock-hewn churches.

There are no recorded car parks nearby. The best time is with the north wind (tramontana): the beach faces south and is sheltered from north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds, and also from east (levante) and west (ponente) winds, while with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds the sea gets rough. The coastline is affected by erosion: do not trample the dunes. It is part of the Pinete dell'Arco Ionico Natura 2000 site.
