About the beach
Lido Conchiglie is a seaside spot on the Ionian coast north of Gallipoli, before Santa Maria al Bagno. The beach is sandy for almost two kilometres, with stretches of high coast; just over half the beachfront is free, the rest is taken up by a few beach clubs, some of which list aids for people with disabilities. It is suitable for families.
Behind it rises the Altolido ridge: on its highest point stands the church of the abbey of San Mauro, founded by Basilian monks, with a cycle of 13th-century frescoes. Continuing north you reach Santa Maria al Bagno, with the Quattro Colonne of the Fiume di Galatena tower and the freshwater spring where corsairs once took on supplies. To the south the coast continues towards Torre Sabea and Gallipoli.
The car parks are close by, the first a few steps away. Gallipoli is a Blue Flag municipality. The beach faces west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and south (ostro) winds it is sheltered, with south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Montagna Spaccata e Rupi di San Mauro Natura 2000 site.
