The name of the caves of Roca comes from the byzantine Greek “posià”, indicating a place where it was possible to find drinking water. There is a perfect name, “Poesia”, to refers to the wonderful stone architectures by the Adriatic Sea of the marina of Melendugno.
The caves of Poesia Grande and Poesia Piccola form a karst complex, which meanders through the undergrounds nearby a drinking water source. The complex consists of three rooms with elliptical shapes and several galleries, with access from the sea, at the base of the cliff, and from land. However, there are also those who prefer to dive from a height of 4 metres, into the blue sea.
The cave Poesia Grande is connected to another cave, where there is a small sandy beach: from here, one can enter the cave Poesia Piccola, important for the votive inscriptions, signs and symbols, which probably date back between the 2nd century BC and the Roman Republican age. This site is inside the area of the Graecìa Salentina.
