Crypt of the Blessed Virgin of Coelimanna

Located on the Supersano-Casarano provincial road, the Crypt is also called Virgo Manna Coeli, and consists of a space carved into the rock along the Supersano ridge, near the Cemetery, next to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Coelimanna built in 1746.\n\nAccess is through an entrance about 1 meter wide, which, together with a window, is the only source of light. The interior space is divided according to the layout of early Christian basilicas, with two pillars of different shapes and sizes supporting an arch.\n\nThe presence of some frescoes suggests that the rocky ridge was likely covered with wall paintings. The paintings present two types: an iconic character and a decorative one, with inscriptions in two languages as evidence of a gradual Latinization of the population. The space also includes two altars, one probably original while the other is in Baroque style and encloses a Byzantine fresco.
