The ancient Casale (village) Sombrino was built around the 11th century on the ridge of Murge Salentine, in the area which used to be called Spalla del Palombaro, almost 100 metres above sea level.

It was on the crossroad which connected the Via Istmica, which from Casole d’Otranto led to Gallipoli, with the road that from Santa Caterina of Galatina led to Leuca and, for this reason, it represented an important place where pilgrims could stopover.

The settlement, probably of Basilian origin, used to include also the Church of San Giacomo Sombrino, of which it is still possible to admire the ancient beauty, with the medieval façade and the gabble roof. The church was part of the properties of the nearby Abbey of San Nicola di Casole and an altar of the 16th century can be still seen.
