Chiesa rupestre di Santa Maria la Greca

Entirely carved into the rock, the small rupestrian church dedicated to Santa Maria la Greca, dating back to the 10th century, opens along the Gravina della Madonna della Scala in Massafra.\n\nTrapezoidal in shape, the interior houses an altar and a triptych of frescoes depicting the Madonna with Child, known as Madonna della Greca, and on the sides San Rocco and San Sebastiano.\n\nAccording to tradition, it was the Mago Greguro who painted the small church to thank the Virgin for saving his daughter Margheritella, who risked being burned alive after being accused of witchcraft.
