The rock-cut church of San Cipriano

Statte (TA)

Dating from the 9th century AD, the rock-cut church of San Cipriano, also dedicated to San Giuliano, is located in the ravine of Triglie, just a few metres away from the 18th-century Church of St. Michael, between Statte and Crispiano.

The crypt features and irregular plan, divided into two naves by two piers: it encompasses a square chamber housing a tomb, whose walls are decorated with the fresco of San Giuliano and a Latin inscription. In addition to a few votive inscriptions, only a few traces are left from the rest of the 13th-century frescoes that once graced the church.

At the back of the hall, in addition to the fake apsis which terminates the two naves, there are the small cell of San Giuliano on the left-hand side, and the cell of the choir on the right.

The crypt has been the main house of worship of the ancient village of Triglie, a cave settlement of which survive eight rock-hewn tombs and ruins of primitive dwellings.
