Just a stone’s throw from Statte lies the cave settlement of Capocanale, one of the most prominent examples of cave civilization in the territory of Taranto, characterized by ravines and lame formations frequented by man from the late-Roman period up until the beginning of the 2nd millennium.
The lame formations are crossed by the ancient routes of the settlement, partly built with dry stone and partly dug out of rock. Here it’s easy to run into caves, building foundations and pit and chamber tombs. Very interesting is the settlement by the lama dello jazzo, consisting of a series of structures intended for the shelter of sheep and goats.
In the same area is located the Masseria Capocanale, an old, 17th-century manor house which represents a fascinating example of farmstead in the territory of Taranto, the very beating heart of a nature park spread over 52 ha.
