The ancient architectural complex of Centopietre is located in a square which opens up after the square Marco Pedone. The scholars agree that it was used as “heroon”, a funerary monument, but during the other centuries it was given a medieval connotation.

The characteristic monument, built with blocks belonging to a Roman mausoleum, has the shape of a rectangular small temple, covered by sloped roof, made of blocks of monoliths. Inside, it has two different aisles divided by columns and pillars, which bear the 26 slabs of the roof. It has also some traces of byzantine frescos dating back to the 11th – 16th century, representing thirteen saints of Eastern origin, in vertical position and with the front face, according to a typical Basilian tradition.

In front of it, there is the Church of San Giovanni, built in the first half of the 11th century, recalling the epic battle between the Christians and the Saracens in 877.
