The San Vincenzo Chanel flows for approximately 3km through the green of Castrignano del Capo’s countryside, just a short distance from Finibus Terrae, dominated by the white lighthouse on the horizon. It represents one of the three terraced natural erosions created by karst phenomena which have taken place along the road to Santa Maria di Leuca.
A natural stone staircase leads into this magical world, where the work of nature together with man’s hand have brought into being 40 caves, partly carved out of rock, partly natural, opening out onto both channel slopes, and connected to each other via a concrete bridge.
Some of them are barren, some frescoed, while others are decorated with a simple cross, the only remaining piece of furniture of what is thought to have been a vast cave settlement, of which remains only a series of gorges camouflaged among olive trees and rocks.
The channel flows through the last two stages of the pilgrimage routes headed to the Sanctuary of Finibus Terrae.
