About the beach
Torre Ovo, the seaside village of Torricella, is here a stretch of rocky coast about one and a half kilometres long: low rocks and small cliffs, with coves where you can climb down into the water. There are no beach clubs and the coast is free; you swim from the rock, so you will need water shoes and caution when the sea is rough. For small children the sandy beaches nearby are easier.
The tower stands on the headland known as Monte dell'Ovo, on the border with Maruggio, and according to the sources it cannot be visited because it is at risk of collapse. In the bay you can see the remains of a Hellenistic landing place, with a 43-metre pier, and a necropolis and a small hoard of Magna Graecia coins have been found in the area. Here too is the so-called Prateria Pietrificata, a sedimentary rock formation, and traces of the old tuna fisheries remain.
The nearest listed car park is almost a kilometre away. The coast faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante) and south-east (scirocco) winds the sea is calm, with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds it gets rough. It is part of the Duna di Campomarino Natura 2000 site.
