About the beach
West of Campomarino, towards Torre Ovo, the Maruggio coast continues with over three kilometres of sand as far as the Acquadolce area; along the way you pass the Madonna dell'Altomare and Posto Vecchio areas. The beachfront is almost all free, with few beach clubs, and the water is shallow: suitable for children too.
Behind the beach, for almost its whole length, runs the belt of pale sand dunes with Mediterranean scrub that stretches from Campomarino on both sides of the village. Near the little church of the Madonna d'Altomare, terracottas of the goddess Bendis have been found, a sign that this coast was frequented in ancient times.
The car parks are not close: the nearest is over half a kilometre away, so allow for a walk. Facing south, it is sheltered from the north wind (tramontana) and the other northerly winds; with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds the sea gets rough. The beach is affected by erosion: do not trample the dunes. Maruggio is a Blue Flag municipality. It is part of the Duna di Campomarino Natura 2000 site.
