About the beach
Torre Mozza, on the coast of Ugento, takes its name from the outline of the ruined tower overlooking the sea, built in the 16th century against Saracen raids and called torre Fiumicelli on old maps. The beach is long, of very fine white sand, and also includes the Fontanelle stretch. The seabed slopes gently and is suitable for children; much of the beachfront is free, among beach clubs and holiday villages.
Behind it rises a chain of dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub, which separates the sand from the coast road and the houses. The beach is in the Litorale di Ugento regional nature park, where the park's protection rules apply, and the data report severe erosion.
The car parks are a short distance away. Ugento is a Blue Flag municipality. The beach faces south-west: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered, with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio) and west (ponente) winds the sea gets rough. It is part of the Litorale di Ugento Natura 2000 site.
