About the beach
Torre Chianca takes its name from the watchtower built in the 16th century against Saracen raids. The beach is of pale sand for over four kilometres, with dunes along much of it; towards the tower is the Spiaggia del Conte. There are six beach clubs, but about four fifths of the seafront remain free, and the sand makes it suitable for families.
To the north, at the end of the road that runs along the beach clubs, the Idume river crosses the dunes and flows into the sea: here the water is colder because of the freshwater springs. The beach lies within the Rauccio park, with its holm oak wood and coastal marshes. It is part of the Rauccio Natura 2000 site. Some beach clubs have boardwalks or a JOB chair for people with reduced mobility.
There is no shortage of car parks: the nearest are a few steps from the beach. The coast faces north-east and is windswept, so much so that it draws kitesurfers and windsurfers: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and east (levante) winds the sea gets rough, with south-east (scirocco), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered. Lecce is a Blue Flag municipality.
