About the beach
South of Torre Canne begins a sandy beach over three and a half kilometres long, backed almost without a break by dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub. It runs from the Fiume Piccolo area towards Lido Morelli and is almost entirely free: there are three beach clubs and they take up only short stretches.
This is the Dune costiere da Torre Canne a Torre San Leonardo regional nature park, established in 2006, which protects beaches, dunes, wetlands, karst ravines and a stretch of the ancient Via Traiana. Behind the dunes there are wetlands used for fish farming. Rules protecting the dunes and vegetation apply in the park, and the coast here is subject to erosion: best not to trample the scrub. It is part of the Litorale Brindisino Natura 2000 site.
The seabed is sandy and slopes gently, suitable for children. Car parks are few: the nearest is a few hundred metres away. Facing north-east, the beach is exposed to north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and east (levante) winds; with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds the sea stays calm.
