About the beach

The San Pietro in Bevagna beach stretches for just over four kilometres of soft, fine sand, with no rocks, sloping gently into the sea. Almost the whole beachfront is free; in places there are beach clubs and kiosks where you can hire sunloungers and sunshades. The water stays shallow for a long way out, which makes it suitable for children.

The village takes its name from the sanctuary of San Pietro, a church built against a medieval tower: according to tradition, the apostle Peter is said to have landed here after a storm, and the place is the destination of an annual pilgrimage. Off the shore lies the wreck of a Roman ship loaded with half-finished marble sarcophagi. Behind the sand are stretches of dune with Mediterranean scrub.

There are many car parks close to the beach. The coastline faces south: with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds the sea is calm, with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds it gets rough. The beach is affected by erosion. Manduria is a Blue Flag municipality. It is part of the Torre Colimena and Duna di Campomarino Natura 2000 sites.
