About the beach
Materdomini is the rocky coast north of the port of Brindisi: over five kilometres of low rocks with small sandy coves, such as Cala Licola and La Conca, reaching as far as the marina. The beachfront is largely taken up by facilities, with five beach clubs, some wheelchair accessible or with a JOB chair; the free stretches are mostly on the rocks.
About four hundred metres away, at the entrance to the port, the Castello Alfonsino stands on the island of Sant'Andrea; also called Castello Rosso for the colour of its stone, it was built in the Aragonese period as a defensive outpost and has been restored and reopened to the public. Next to it is the marina, in the most sheltered bend of the port of Brindisi.
The car parks are a short walk away. To get into the water from the rocks you will need water shoes. The coast faces north-east: north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and east (levante) winds make the sea rough, while with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds it is sheltered.
