About the beach
Lido Torretta lies on the Lizzano coastline, but it is an administrative exclave of the municipality of Taranto. The stretch is just over two and a half kilometres long: mostly fine sand, the rest rocky shore, with dunes flowering with Mediterranean scrub in between. About 70 per cent of the beachfront is free and there are a few beach clubs.
The name comes from an old lookout, now in ruins, set on the rocks that reach out into the sea. The water is clear and shallow over the sandy seabed, suitable for families and children; the area is also popular with anglers and water sports enthusiasts. On the rocky shore you will need water shoes.
The car parks are a few steps from the shore, and one beach club lists boardwalks for access. Facing south, it is sheltered with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale) and north-west (maestrale) winds, and also with east (levante) and west (ponente) winds; with south-east (scirocco), south (ostro) and south-west (libeccio) winds the sea gets rough. On days with a southerly wind it is better to choose the sandy stretches rather than the rocks.
