About the beach
Capo San Vito is the headland south of the port of Taranto which, together with capo San Nicolicchio, encloses the Mar Grande. The coast, about one kilometre and seven hundred metres long, is made up mostly of cliffs and rocks, with about 600 metres of sand in small beaches. A large part of the shore is linked to the Italian Navy, and only about a third of the beachfront is free.
On the cape stands the lighthouse, a white tower on a two-storey building with a white light flashing every 15 seconds: the Region's records give 1848 as the year it was built and 1869 as the year it was first lit. It is run by the Italian Navy. On the cape there is also an early modern coastal tower with gun ports, and an Archaic-period necropolis is recorded in the area.
The car parks are a short distance away. Along the cliffs you walk down, and on the rocks you will need water shoes. Facing west, the cape is sheltered with north (tramontana), north-east (grecale), east (levante), south-east (scirocco) and south (ostro) winds; with south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds the sea gets rough.
