Lying on Neviano’s outskirts, the rock settlement of St. Nicholas in Macugno was once a pole of attraction for the whole rural settlement of Macugno, and a staging post for merchants, pilgrims, men of the cloth, peasants and shepherds along their long-distance journeys.
Of the ancient Byzantine settlement remain the farmhouse, a 15th-century, two-story outpost whose façade features a depiction of St. Nicholas and of a martyred saint now almost illegible, the medieval large wall and four underground caves, of which one of considerable size and featuring a pillar at the centre.
A cycleway links the settlement with Neviano’s urban area, running across the landscapes of Salento’s sierras, the best way to discover the wildlife and the lush vegetation of this area.

Architecture and works
