The appealing Wwf Oasis of Monte Sant’Elia, located on the southern slope of the eastern Murge, stretches on a hill almost 400 metres above sea level, overlooking the Gulf of Taranto. From here, it is possible to admire the mount Pollino in the distance.
The oasis is almost entirely covered by the Caracciolo forest which beings in Mottola as far as Martina Franca. It also includes a masseria (farmstead) with several areas where people live, among them 17 trulli which probably date back to the 17th century. Behind the trulli, there are some “jazzi”, typical animal fences with drystone walls.
Don’t miss the several events organized inside the oasis, with tastings of organic and fair-trade products. The Oasis can be visited upon reservation.
