Tancred Fountain in Brindisi, also known as Fonte Grande (Big Fountain), is located along the strada provincial (provincial road) which leads to San Vito dei Normanni. King Tancred, the Norman king who has given the name to the fountain, built it in 1192, on a previous Roman fountain.
The fountain, located along the ancient Appian Way, the most important Roman street, was used as shelter and as a place for watering and to irrigate the nearby gardens and vegetable gardens. It was restored during the 19th century, enlarged and embellished with the coat of arm of Ferrante Loffedo, the symbol of the city and that of Charles V.
Thanks to recent maintenance works, the fountain has a green area with benches and a new lighting system and it is a pleasant gathering place.
