The Torrione dell’Inferno (Hell’s tower) and the adjacent Curtain connected to the Swabian Castle (or Castle on Land) were built at the behest of Ferdinand of Aragon in 1484 and planned by Giulio Antonio Acquaviva.
In the first years of the 16th century the Imperator Charles V reinforced them, since he was worried about the risk of Turkish invasions.
The Tower has a cylindrical shape with forty openings for cannons and it has been modified over the centuries, changing the original shape. The most recent ones were done during the first years of the 20th century, when the Bastion was turned into watchtower for the guards to enter the military area of the Italian Navy.
The part which overlooks via della Libertà was considerably changed according to the needs of the old stronghold and the later restoration aimed at giving it the ancient look.
