The Bastion, dedicated to the imperator Charles V, stands in Brindisi near Porta Mesagne, an ancient entrance gate dating back to the time of Frederik II.

The construction was started by the king Ferdinand of Aragon and continued by Giovanni Battista Loffredo, military engineer, in the first years of the 16th century and then finished in 1551, as the inscription on the south-west corner recalls.

Giovanni Battista Loffredo made important changes on the Aragonese building, mostly on the walls. It was indeed elevated adding the low square and the embrasures of the upper part were welled up.

The pentagonal stronghold has three embrasures by the sides which do not slope down. On the south-west corner it is possible to see the coats of arms of Charles V, of the viceroy of Naples Don Pietro di Toledo and, on the lower part, two emblems of Giovanni Battista Loffredo.
