Located in the very heart of Ruffano’s historic centre, the Crypt of San Marco lies beneath the Carmine church, which was once also dedicated to San Marco.
The hypogeum has the shape of a semicircle, with a large pillar at the centre dug out of the rock monolith. To the left and right of the pillar are rock-cut tombs dating from around 1000AD.
The frescoes, of good quality, are unfortunately ruined due to humidity, although one can still clearly see what is thought to be the owner of the small church, painted behind St. Peter and the Virgin, all that's left of a hoary cycle of paintings. Of the two main entrances, only one is still standing: the door to the right of the liturgical room that leads into a stone-hewn staircase.
In addition to the ceremonial functions, the crypt had originally also burial functions. In fact, countless tombs and bones have been unearthed, the latter housed in a small glass case.
The story
For now this text is only available in Italian.

Dates with an empty square are uncertain: few or unverified sources report them.
Architecture and works
