Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo

It overlooks the square of the same name, the regal church dedicated to the apostle Peter, the oldest religious building in San Pietro Vernotico, a splendid Baroque temple, erected in the seventeenth century on a pre-existing early medieval construction, of which traces remain in the adjoining sacristy room.\n\nIt has the golden color of the local stone, the elegant facade that leads to the interior, articulated on a single nave, equipped with a transept. The characteristic dome, entirely painted, protrudes at the level of the transept.\n\nThe interior is a triumph of Baroque paintings and stucco, the main element of the rich decorative layout, including the frescoes of the dome dedicated to the evangelists and paintings depicting the deeds of the glorious apostles Peter and Paul.\n\nLegend has it that the well located on the left side of the building, sealed in the twentieth century, had the miraculous power to alleviate suffering and heal the “tarantula” victims who came before San Pietro.
