About the beach

Torre Sant'Andrea is a coast of limestone rock about two kilometres long, all jagged, with crevices, small caves and sea stacks carved by the sea north and south of the tiny harbour. In the small bay there is a little free beach with a sandy seabed; otherwise you stay on the rocks, so bring water shoes. There are no beach clubs.

On the north side, walking a few dozen metres over the rock, you find ledges cut into the rocky shore to dive from; going through a small tunnel in the rock you come out beyond the cove, where the sea is more open. The coast is watched over by the 16th-century tower, later used as a military post, and not far away is the Sant'Andrea di Missipezza lighthouse, in service since 1932, a brick tower chequered in black and white.

The car parks are close by. The coast faces east: the right day is one with a north wind (tramontana), when the sea here stays calm, and the bay is also sheltered with south (ostro), south-west (libeccio), west (ponente) and north-west (maestrale) winds; with north-east (grecale), east (levante) and south-east (scirocco) winds the sea gets rough. Melendugno is a Blue Flag municipality.
