Known as the Trappeto del Duca (the Duke’s oil mill), the hypogeum in Villa Castelli was used since the 17th century as an oil mill, accessed via a path that run along the bottom of the ravine’s natural inlet in the Guardiola district.
Completely carved out of rock, with an average depth of 3m with respect to the ravine’s bottom and 10m from vico Caliandro’s street level, the Trappeto del Duca has a surface of approximately 300smq laid out in the shape of an irregular T. It features a large skylight in correspondence with vico Caliandro and two entrances looking onto the ravine. The interior accommodates the ancient millstone in limestone and several wooden presses fitted into the recesses dug into rock.
