The underground tomb Genoviva, part of a building in Via Polibio no. 75, dates back to the 4th century BC and is characterised by a narrow staircase with nine steps and four chambers along the vestibule.
Large painted slabs and Doric half columns separate the different chambers. Through a mirror, it is possible to catch the sight of a burial bed in one of the rooms.
The hypogeum is evidence of a wealthy family and it is one of the most ancient example, hypogeum which was used as monumental necropolis. This tradition, ended at the beginning of the 5th century BC, characterized the Hellenic period in Taranto, also after it had been conquered by Romans.
