The impressive city walls known as “Paretone”, old fortified outpost, used to surround the Messapic town of Ceglie.
It was built around the 5th or 4th century BC ,using local materials, as defensive walls against the inhabitants of Taranto, who wanted to expand, and the pirates from Illyria , who wanted to find slave workers. It was between 3-4 and 5-8 metres large.
It is still possible to see some ruins of these impressive city walls along the ring road of Ceglie. Moreover, the outer part of it used to communicate with a specchia, an old structures typical of Puglia which was used to defend.
