The archaeological park near the rich Archaeological Museum, important for its collections and for its wonderful building, is a precious treasure trove, inside the heart of the ancient Messapic town of Ugento.
The village was inhabited during the byzantine period, after the Goths, Saracens and Longboards invasions, who plundered Ugento. In the park there are the ruins of the old Messapic city walls, the necropolis and a medieval crypt, with the vault full of decorations and the series of paintings representing the Virgin Mary, the Archangel Gabriel, the Crucifixion and Mary Magdalene.
The nearby museum keeps a real treasure trove, with the architraves belonging to the ancient Messapic and Roman civil constructions, stone artefacts and bones, tomb slabs, the characteristic vase called “trozzelle”, referring to the small wheels on its handle. An important symbol which nowadays is kept in Taranto, is a small bronze stature of the god Zeus, discovered in Ugento and called “pupo” by its inhabitants.

Il parco archeologico di Ugento è attiguo al Museo di Archeologia, in largo Sant'Antonio, e fa parte dell'area dell'antico centro messapico 5. Conserva i ruderi della cinta muraria messapica, una necropoli e una cripta medievale con un ciclo pittorico 5. La cinta muraria risale alla metà del IV secolo a.C. e racchiude circa 145 ettari, il centro più esteso della Messapia secondo il Sistema Museale Ugento 2. La città compare nelle fonti antiche come Uzentum, Uxentum o Exentum 6.
History
VI-V secolo a.C.
Le più antiche aree funerarie messapiche di Ugento sono datate a questo periodo; il Sistema Museale Ugento dedica una scheda a queste tombe.1
Metà del IV secolo a.C.
Viene costruita la cinta muraria messapica, di circa 145 ettari, il centro più esteso della Messapia.2
IV-III secolo a.C.
Le tombe di questo periodo corrispondono alla fase di massimo sviluppo della città.3
209 a.C.
Lo scavo di tratti delle mura in località Armino e Cupa (40, 130 e 100 m) ha individuato due fasi costruttive e proiettili di fionda legati, secondo gli autori, all'assedio romano del 209 a.C.4
Età bizantina
La scheda regionale colloca la frequentazione del sito nel periodo bizantino, dopo il saccheggio di Ugento da parte di Goti, Saraceni e Longobardi.5
Architecture and works
Il parco conserva i ruderi dell'antica cinta muraria messapica, la necropoli e una cripta medievale con volta decorata e un ciclo pittorico che raffigura la Vergine, l'Arcangelo Gabriele, la Crocifissione e Maria Maddalena 5. Nel museo attiguo sono custoditi architravi di costruzioni civili messapiche e romane, reperti litici e ossei, lastroni tombali e recipienti detti "trozzelle" 5. La statuetta in bronzo di Zeus scoperta a Ugento, detta localmente "pupo", è custodita a Taranto 5. Il Touring Club ricorda che nell'adiacente parco si possono visitare alcune tombe di epoca messapica 7.
Antiquity
Il centro messapico di Ugento è l'antica Uzentum (Ouxenton), con fasi messapica e romana 6. Gli Uzentini sono citati da Livio (22.61), gli Uxentini da Plinio il Vecchio (Storia naturale 3.105), Exentum da Tolomeo (Geografia 3.1.76) e Uzintum nella Tavola Peutingeriana tra Baletium e Veretum 6. Le mura messapiche, di metà IV secolo a.C., includevano circa 145 ettari 2. Indagini geofisiche (GPR ed ERT) sono state condotte a Sant'Antonio, su un tratto di mura e sulla necropoli, e nel castello 8. Uno scavo ha riguardato tratti di cinta in località Armino e Cupa 4.
