A journey back to the Middle Ages through the land of the Messapians. The borgo Terra Museum in Muro Leccese is the first example of promoting a small town in Salento, poised between the late Middle Ages and modern times. The museum is set up in the ground floor of Palazzo del Principe in piazza del Popolo, and gives a general overview of the town's history, social and economic life from the 14th century.
The timeline of the town is displayed on the illustrating panels placed in niches of the room which the king's squires used as a cattle shed. These give a sense of the various historical periods of the town, from the transformation of the castle into a Renaissance palace, to the everyday medieval life recosntructed through artefacts unearthed during archaeological excavations. The palace's basements and dungeons are not accessible for people with disabilities.
