Dating back to the 18th century, the Masseria Macurano stands on Alessano’s upland, not far from the small town of Montesardo.
It draws its name from the nearby cave settlement of Macurano, a small underground village thought to date from the 8th century, which is characterized by a series of caves destined to the cult and an interesting countryside dotted with underground oil mills and furrowed with channel and road networks.
The masseria complex is characterized by the incorporation of several buildings around a sturdy two-story tower-like building, used in the past for defensive purposes. Laid out around it are the buildings once used as animal shelters or as a storehouse for grains and tobacco, such as the stable, the wood-fired oven, the olive trees and an adorable Mediterranean garden enclosed by high Messapian walls.
High fortifying walls built with stones, red earth and ashlars of limestone tuff surround the entire complex and its wide plot of land.
Currently the masseria is a hospitality facility.
