Snuggled amongst the olive trees that dot the countryside near the abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, the Masseria Giampaolo is one of the sixteen rural complexes built on the ancient feudal lands, today in the territory of Lecce.

Erected in the 16th century, the tower-masseria is an impressive two-storey fortified complex fitted with machicolation and a stone bridge used in the past as a drawbridge. The interior features groin-vaulted halls and elegant fireplaces.

The tracks left by the wagons around the large courtyard and the two underground oil mills testify to the agricultural vocation of the complex which, already in the 17th century, when it was known by the name of GioPaulo, is thought to have comprised several other buildings such as eight one-storey houses, several sheds, a well, an oil mill, a dovecote, two gardens, an oven and a mill.

Today the masseria is a cozy accommodation facility.
