Set in the middle of an expanse of centuries-old olive trees, in the countryside of Surbo, just a stone’s through from the medieval abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, Masseria Melcarne is an ancient fortification which was with time converted into an elegant noble residence.
Built between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century to defend the country from sea raids, as inferred by the ancient machicolations placed along the outer walls. The tower was also used for production activities, as suggested by the presence of dwellings destined to settlers, farming and the transformation of agricultural products.
In the course of the 18th century the complex undergone important reconstruction works which radically transformed its function. The two elegant balconies supported by robust corbels date from this period, while the complex is further graced by two square dovecotes placed at either side of the tower.
For several years now, the masseria has been converted into a holiday farm which produces bio oil, jams and preserves, as well as wheat, barley and potatoes.
