Sava, located along the road which nowadays connects Taranto to Lecce, was probably the last outpost of Taranto before reaching the hostile Messapic land and there was a large wall dividing the lands of two neighbouring but opposing populations and cultures, which the archaeologists called nowadays “Limitone dei Greci”, large Greek Wall.
It is a really long wall, which looks like the drystone walls of Salento countryside, but it is more impressive and massive. It is possible to see its ruins in contrada Pasano, where there is the namesake Sanctuary Madonna di Pasano, built on the ruins of a former pagan place of worship.
There are several hypotheses regarding its construction: one tells that since the Longboards and the Byzantines were two opposing populations, the second one built this wall, also called “Paretone” (Large wall) which used to stretch from the Adriatic coast South of Brindisi as far as the area of Sava. Here there are more significant ruins: almost 700 metres out of 150 kilometres in total.
