Giurdignano, with its many menhirs and seven dolmens still intact, has been described as the largest and most diversified megalithic site in Italy. Really fascinating is the path amid the stones which embellished the surrounding countryside.
The dolmen Stabile, along a street which connects the town to Giuggianello, stands over the other, amid olive trees and drystone walls, on a 102 metres -high tableland. The dolmen dates back to the beginning of the 2nd century BC, it has a rectangular shape, a slab on a series of blocks and many scholars think it was a part of a bigger megalithic building.
The journey to experience the inner soul of Salento continues through the other spots in the countryside, where it is possible to see other really impressive dolmens, which probably were used as altars, such as the dolmens Orfine, Chiancuse, Peschio, Gravasce, Santa Barbara, Sferracavalli, Paolo Niuri and Grassi.
